The History of Grenelefe

  • The resort was first developed by George Phelps in the 1960s as Arrowhead Development. The resort became internationally renowned under Japanese ownership in the 1980s as Grenelefe Golf and Tennis Resort, with three world-class golf courses, 20 professional tennis courts and a conference facility that drew companies from all over the world.
    • Throughout the 1980s, Grenelefe hosted international visitors as well as some of the world’s top athletes – serving as a PGA Qualifying School and the site of the United Airlines Tennis Tournament of Champions.
  • In 2001, the resort was acquired by new owners, yet much of the community remained undeveloped for six years.
    • In 2002 the West Course was closed, leaving only the South and East courses available for play. This left many residents with homes overlooking an overgrown field instead of a pristine golf course.
  • Feltrim Developments contracted to purchase the property in early 2008, and plans to invest $300 million in improvements and renovations over the next ten years, renaming it Horizons at Grenelefe.

Marina Area

Water plays an important role in resort living, Florida-style—and that’s true at Horizons at Grenelefe, too. Feltrim’s plans include a marina area overlooking 3,000-acre Lake Marion, with 34 boat slips and dozens of lakefront lofts. A land bridge is planned to connect the marina to the main resort area.

Conference Center

In addition to renovating the existing 50,000-sq.-ft. meeting facility to meet today’s business standards, Feltrim will convert a nearby 250-room hotel facility to a 4.5-star resort, featuring spa facilities and a 20,000-sq.-ft. fitness center.

Arnold Palmer West Course

Golf will be the focal point of life at Horizons at Grenelefe. The West Course, which in 1982 was named the state’s best by Florida Golf Week magazine, will be renovated by Arnold Palmer Design and modeled after New Jersey’s famed Pine Valley Golf Club, consistently rated one of the top golf courses in the world.
